Green Turtles

Hello! Welcome to the Green Turtles!

Teacher: Gavin Morris

Teaching Assistant: Nicola Cross

We ask that you hear your child read at least 3 times a week. This is recorded on a chart in class and rewards are distributed every half term. Reading is a vital skill on which much of their other learning rests, and regular reading at home makes a huge difference in the classroom. If you would like any support or advice on helping your child with their reading, please come in either before or after school see your child's teacher.

Children will receive spellings and times tables to learn at home every Friday and they will be tested on these the following week.

PE is on a Wednesday afternoon, children will need a plain white t-shirt, plain black or grey shorts or tracksuit bottoms, and plimsolls or trainers. Please leave their P.E. kit in school when possible because P.E. times may sometimes change. Please write your child's name in all their kit!

Our topic this half term is ‘Into the Amazon.’

We are linking our English work to our class topic through the story Where the Wild Things Are. We will be: reading carefully and demonstrating that we understand what we have read, imitating the story through writing in the role of different characters and thinking about why the characters are acting the way they do. We will also be writing our own journey story adapting the text.  We will also be researching and writing information texts about the Amazonian Rainforest, learning about Brazilian myths and legends and writing instructions for some Brazilian recipes.

Year 1 Maths

This half term year one are starting by learning about number and place value. The children will be concentrating on recognising groups and numbers up to 10, compare groups of objects and numbers and ordering numbers accurately. Following this they will be learning about addition and subtraction where the children will be expected to be able to find number bonds to 10, use part whole models and subtract through crossing out and counting back.

Year 2 Maths

This half term year two are learning all about numbers and place value - focusing on numbers to 100. The children will be representing numbers to 100 using concrete objects and visual representations. The children will also order numbers and objects and learn to count in 2s, 5s and 10s. Following this the children will be learning about addition and subtraction adding and subtracting 2 two digit numbers.

Big Maths, Beat That!

Every week in our Big Maths tests we get the chance to practice our arithmetic skills using our number bonds to 10 and 20 and show what we have remembered from our Supermovers counting in multiples of 2, 5 and 10, with the challenge to beat our previous weeks score.

In Science we will be exploring the different animals who call the Amazon home and how does the rainforest act as a habitat for animals there. We will identify and classify a variety of animals whilst also saying what objects have never been alive. We will also learn about food chains and what plants and animals may be part of one.

Wider Curriculum

In computer studies we will be developing our digital art skills through creating Rainforest images and learning how to save our work. In geography we will be using maps and atlases to identify where Brazil is and begin to compare the Rainforest to Poolsbrook. In design and technology we will be designing and making our own Rainforest wind up wonders using a simple mechanism.
