Hello! Welcome to the Green Turtles!
Teacher: Gavin Morris
Teaching Assistant: Nicola Cross
We ask that you hear your child read at least 3 times a week. This is recorded on a chart in class and rewards are distributed every half term. Reading is a vital skill on which much of their other learning rests, and regular reading at home makes a huge difference in the classroom. If you would like any support or advice on helping your child with their reading, please come in either before or after school see your child's teacher.
Children will receive spellings and times tables to learn at home every Friday and they will be tested on these the following week.
PE is on a Wednesday afternoon, children will need a plain white t-shirt, plain black or grey shorts or tracksuit bottoms, and plimsolls or trainers. Please leave their P.E. kit in school when possible because P.E. times may sometimes change. Please write your child's name in all their kit!
Our topic this half term is ‘How did it all begin?’
We are linking our English work to our class topic through the story Town is by the Sea. We will be: reading carefully and demonstrating that we understand what we have read, imitating the story through writing in the role of different characters and thinking about why the characters are acting the way they do. We will also be writing our own descriptions of our routines and the village of Poolsbrook. We will also be researching and writing non chronological reports about mining.
Year 1 Maths
This half term year one are starting by learning about number and place value. The children will be concentrating on recognising groups and numbers up to 20, compare groups of objects and numbers and ordering numbers accurately. Following this they will be learning about addition and subtraction where the children will be expected to be able to find number bonds to 10 and crossing 10 through addition and subtraction.
Year 2 Maths
This half term year two are learning all about statistics including pictograms and bar charts. They will be learning to recognise, name and identify 2d and 3d shapes and discuss their properties.
Big Maths, Beat That!
Every week in our Big Maths tests we get the chance to practice our arithmetic skills using our number bonds to 10 and 20 and show what we have remembered from our Supermovers counting in multiples of 2, 5 and 10, with the challenge to beat our previous weeks score.
In Science we will be exploring movement. We will be testing how cars move on different surfaces and begin to work scientifically to complete some simple tests. We will learn how to record our experiments and write about what happened. We will use this knowledge when testing the vehicles we make in design and technology.
In computer studies we will be developing our photography skills and taking, editing and printing photographs of the local area - pop in and see some of the finished work!
In design and technology we will be designing, making and evaluating mine carts.
In history we will be learning about our local area in the past. We will be learning about the coal mining industry and significant people who have helped shape the history of our surrounding area.
